The plan to try to kill Yamamoto was born just four days before it was executed. Since the Battle of Midway, American crypto analysts had continued to break the Japanese naval code, JN25. On April 14, a decoded message revealed that on April 18, Yamamoto planned to make an inspection and morale tour of forward bases on Bougainville. Flying from the Japanese headquarters in Rabaul, Yamamoto's visit would put him closer to U.S. forces than he had ever been.
